HYDERABAD, MARCH 28. Renowned gastroenterologist and director of the Centre for Liver Research and Diagnostics (CLRD) at Kanchanbagh, C.M. Habibullah, has warned the public, particularly pregnant women, against taking the jaundice outbreak in the city lightly. Prof. Habibullah said the incidence of jaundice in the old city was not a rare occurrence with over 100 cases of Hepatitis E being treated at CLRD in one month before the current outbreak. Twelve of them were pregnant women. Hepatitis E can cause serious complications in pregnant women. "It is very risky. Some can slip into coma and the pregnancy can get aborted as well," he said. Fortunately, the 12 cases that were treated at CLRD did not develop any complications. However, there was a tendency to ignore the gravity of Hepatitis E among the public, which could lead to serious consequences, he said. "The incidence of Hepatitis E is growing in other parts of the world, so we have to deal with it extremely carefully," Prof. Habibullah said.
