Adopt safe abortion techniques, doctors told

By Our Staff Correspondent

B.K. Srinivas Murthy, a leading physician, inaugurating a symposium on safe abortions at the Police Gymkhana auditorium in Bellary on Monday.

BELLARY, MARCH 29. B.K. Srinivasmurthy, a leading physician, has called upon doctors to adopt safe abortion methods to not only bring down the mortality rate among women but also to uphold the dignity and honour of the profession.

He was speaking after inaugurating a seminar on safe abortions organised by the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Bellary branch, in association with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at the Police Gymkhana auditoriums here on Monday.

He said the mortality rate among women has been on the rise because of unsafe abortion practices. This has posed a challenge to the medical profession. Adopting safe methods will help save the lives of women, he added.

Shankar, another physician, explained about the use of "MVA equipment" for conducting safe abortions. Veerendrakumar, gynaecologist, spoke on the selection of beneficiaries, the problems likely to crop up and the steps to be taken to solve them. B.K. Anupama spoke about the advantages of medically terminated pregnancies.

Vijaya Srinivasan, Programme Director of Path Finder, a non-governmental organisation engaged in popularising safe abortions using MVA, gave an audio-visual presentation on safe abortions through the MVA technique. She also told about a training programme for doctors in the city in this regard.

Yoganand Reddy, President of the IMA Bellary branch, while commending the efforts of the FPAI in family planning and extending quality health services to people, promised to extend support to all programmes organised by the FPAI.

Sharada Malebennur, Chairperson of the FPAI, who presided over the programme, requested private practitioners to refer all poor people intending to go in for abortion to the FPAI, which, in turn, will conduct the abortions for free.

H. Muralidhar, Medical Officer of the FPAI, welcomed.
