BANGALORE, MARCH 29. The Opposition, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), today staged a dharna in the well of the Legislative Assembly protesting against the Government Order dated March 28, 2005 dissolving the Bellary City Municipal Council and appointing the Deputy Commissioner of Bellary district as the administrator of the Bellary City Corporation, which has been constituted but elections are yet to be held. The BJP was in power in the Bellary City Municipal Council. The Government in its notification has mentioned that the Bellary City Corporation was constituted on September 28, 2004 and elections to the Corporation Council had to be conducted within six months of its constitution. As the Government was unable to conduct the elections within the stipulated period, it has extended the time for holding elections by six months. Raising the issue, the Leader of the Opposition, B.S. Yediyurappa, charged the Government with superseding the Bellary City Municipal Council only because it was being run by the BJP. He said the Government should allow the Municipal Council to function till the elections are held to the Corporation Council. He was supported by the Janata Dal (U) leader J.C. Madhuswamy, the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha member, Vatal Nagaraj, and the BJP member from Bellary, Sriramulu. As a response from the Treasury benches was not forthcoming, the Opposition staged a dharna, following which the Speaker, Krishna, adjourned the House for about an hour. During the recess, the Speaker convened a meeting of Opposition leaders and the Government. On resumption of the session, the Minister for Water Resources, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, stated that as the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will return from New Delhi in the evening, a meeting could be organised on Wednesday to resolve the issue. The Opposition agreed to the suggestion.
