Six panchayat chiefs to submit resignations

By Our Staff Reporter

ERODE, MARCH 29. In protest against non release of water from the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) reservoir to the Upparu reservoir in Dharapuram area, six panchayat presidents have decided to tender their resignations with the District Collector.

The Upparu reservoir situated near Dharapuram was designed to provide water to 6,000 acres directly and 12,000 acres indirectly, by using the seepage water.

Every year, water would be allowed from the PAP reservoir. But no water was released from the PAP reservoir during the last eight years.

The farmers of the Upparu ayacut were relying on rain to water their coconut trees and no wet crop cultivation was done all these years.

The panchayat presidents said most of the borewells in the area had dried up and thousands of coconut trees wilted.

To surrender voter cards

The Upparu farmers had already stated that if water was not provided to them on or before March 29, they would surrender their ration cards and photo identity cards with the Dharapuram tahsildar on March 30 and leave the villages.

The Revenue Divisional Officer, Ms. Venkatara Priya, convened an emergency meeting with the farmers yesterday at Dharapuram to discuss the issue.

After five hours of discussion, the farmers said talks failed and they would go ahead with their decision to surrender their ration cards and photo identity cards on March 30.

Panchayat presidents of Thoppampatty, Gethalrav, Vanjiampalayam, Kannankoil, Surianallure and Sankarandampalayam, located around the Upparu reservoir, have decided to submit resignations.

The district administration is taking all efforts to pacify the farmers.
