A lakh people walk over embers

By Our Staff Reporter

ERODE, MARCH 29. More than a lakh people, including women, police personnel and other Government officials, today walked over glowing embers to propitiate the presiding deity of the Bannariamman Temple near Sathyamangalam today.

The ritual coincided with the Kundam festival, which began at 4 a.m. and continued for more than five hours.

Those who tested cinder-power included the Additional Director General of Police of the Special Task Force, K. Vijaya Kumar, and the Erode Superintendent of Police, P. Balasubramanian.

In connection with the festival, the Erode District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, had declared a local holiday for all Government offices in the district today. To compensate the holiday, April 16 will be a working day. However, banks functioned as usual.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation operated special buses to Bannari from various parts of Erode and Coimbatore districts. Police were deployed in strength to avert any untoward incidents. Special arrangement was made to ensure uninterrupted water supply.
