Water scarcity in Periyar wildlife reserve

MADURAI, MARCH 29. Heat waves in and around Thekkady, a catchment area of Periyar dam and the reserve forest area bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerala, have led to acute water scarcity for the wild animals, especially the elephants, in the Periyar wildlife reserve.

Forest official sources said the Periyar dam level had touched an all-time low of 108 ft .

Tourists now walk more than one km to reach boats as the water has receded in the Thekkady boat station. The officials said that wild animals were being closely monitored and drinking water would be arranged for them if needed. — PTI
