Charge sheet in kidnap case likely today

By S. Vijay Kumar

MADURAI, MARCH 29 . The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the Jayalakshmi case is likely to file the charge sheet in the Maraneri abduction case before the designated judge of the special CBI court here tomorrow.

The case pertains to the abduction of four family members of the Sivakasi woman allegedly by some police personnel and their associates from Maraneri in Virudhunagar district last year. Based on a complaint lodged by her father, K. Alagirisamy, the Maraneri police registered a case and took into custody seven persons, including three police personnel.

Mr. Alagirisamy alleged that the accused came in search of his daughter, who was then away. They kidnapped his wife, son and two grandchildren and decamped with some valuables. He later claimed to have received telephone calls from the suspects that they had murdered Ms. Jayalakshmi. A telegram sent by the complainant to the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court was treated as a habeas corpus petition. When Ms. Jayalakshmi (32) was produced before the Madurai Bench, she levelled a series of charges against more than 20 police officials, including a former Superintendent. She filed an affidavit accusing the policemen of assault, abduction, wrongful confinement and rape. The Madurai Bench handed over the case to the CBI. A special team of its anti-corruption bureau filed the final report in the abduction case early last month. In the charge sheet the then inspector of the Maraneri station is likely to be named accused for "furnishing false information to the court in a bid to protect the accused."

More than 50 public witnesses and material evidence would be included in the charge sheet, CBI sources told The Hindu today.

Final report

The CBI was preparing to file the final report in the Jayalakshmi case in the Madurai Bench on April 4. Winding up the investigation, the agency would make certain recommendations based on its findings of the offences made out, the sources said.
