Appavu walks out

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 29. M. Appavu, Independent, today walked out of the Assembly alleging that he was not given adequate time to present his views.

As Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was about to make a suo motu statement on a pension scheme for construction workers, the member from Radhapuram in Tirunelveli district was on his feet seeking an opportunity to speak, claiming that he was the lone Independent.

Speaker K. Kalimuthu promised him an opportunity depending on availability of time. The Independent would be allotted time only after MLAs elected on party ticket participated in the discussions.

As Mr. Appavu continued to make some remarks, the Speaker asked him not to disrupt the proceedings.

He asked the Chief Minister to present the statement under Rule 110 of the Assembly Rules. Protesting against the Speaker's stand, Mr. Appavu staged a walkout.
