CHENNAI, MARCH 29. The State Government today announced a pension scheme for construction workers with retrospective effect from 2000. Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said construction workers aged 60, who had registered with the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board and continued as its members for at least five years, would get a monthly pension of Rs. 200. Workers who were permanently disabled or those who became unfit for continuing work due to ill-health even before attaining 60 were also entitled to the pension.A total of Rs. 1.46 crores would be disbursed to 3,021 workers this year with effect from 2000. The Government would earmark Rs. 1.15 crores for 2005-06 for disbursement to 4,773 workers including 1,752 new pensioners. Ms. Jayalalithaa recalled the setting up of the welfare board, besides launching the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers (Construction Workers) Welfare Scheme in 1994. Enrolment of construction workers began in May 1995. So far 6,30,812 workers registered themselves with the board. The Government decided to evolve a pension scheme for the construction workers in 2001, she said, recalling the appointment of an Actuary and a task force. The scheme was finalised on the basis of the task force report.
