41 child employees rescued
SALEM MARCH 29. Revenue officials today raided trade establishments at Salem town and rescued 41 child employees. They will be admitted to special schools run by the Society for Monitoring Implementation of Child Labour Elimination. The Salem Revenue Divisional Officer, V. Dakshinamoorthy, and tahsidhar, M. Chandrasekaran, led the team.
Special buses for summer
CHENNAI MARCH 29. In view of summer holidays, the State Express Transport Corporation will operate special buses from Chennai to Udhagamandalam, Kodaikanal, Bangalore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram, Kumbakonam, Salem and Coimbatore. Services will also be operated from Bangalore to Velankanni, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirunelveli. All the specials will be run from April 1 to June 30. Reservation can be made one month in advance, says an official release.
ISTE fellowship
CHENNAI MARCH 29. The Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), New Delhi, has conferred a honorary fellowship for 2005 on M.S. Palanichamy, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Open University, for his contribution to technical education. According to an official release, the ISTE confers honorary fellowship on persons of eminence in engineering and technology who have made significant contribution to the development of technical education and activites of ISTE at the State and national levels.
Progress of SIDCO reviewed
CHENNAI MARCH 29. The Rural Industries Minister, B. Valarmathi, wanted prospective entrepreneurs to make best use of incentives offered by the Government for setting up units. Reviewing the progress of the Small Industries Development Corporation with officials here on Monday, she said people should be made aware of concessions and subsidies available for setting up farm-oriented and food processing units under the "New Anna Marumalachi Thittam." She explained the steps taken by the Government for modernising industrial estates under SIDCO in the State. The Chief Secretary, Lakshmi Pranesh; the Small Industries Secretary, T. Rajendran, and officials from banks participated in the meeting.
Senior panel counsel for Centre
CHENNAI MARCH 29. Advocate K. Ravindranath has been made the Centre's senior panel counsel for conducting its cases in the Madras High Court. According to a Law and Justice Ministry notification, the advocate will conduct all cases other than those relating to income tax and the Railways for three years.
Alliance Air reschedules flights
CHENNAI MARCH 29. Alliance Air (subsidiary of Indian Airlines) has rescheduled flight CD-7478 on the Chennai-Visakapatnam-Raipur-Delhi sector on April 3 and 6. On April 3, the service on the Chennai-Kochi-Visakapatnam-Raipur-Delhi sector will depart at 11.15 a.m. and on April 6, the flight on the Chennai-Visakapatnam-Ranchi-Raipur-Delhi sector will leave here at 11.15 a.m.
Tax collection counters at RBI
CHENNAI MARCH 29. Tax collection counters at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) office here will function beyond the normal business hours on Thursday. It has asked all public sector banks and other designated banks to keep their tax collecting branches open for a reasonably longer time for the benefit of tax assessees, the RBI Regional Director, B. Ghosh, said in a release. The National Clearing Cell will conduct a special floppy-based clearing at 8 p.m. on March 31 to clear all instruments, favouring the Government, deposited on the day.
Suspended from BJP
TIRUPUR MARCH 29. The Tirupur Municipal Chairman, M.N. Palanisamy, was today suspended from the Bharathiya Janata Party. In a release, the State president, C.P. Radhakrishnan, said the action was taken for anti-party activities and for making defamatory remarks against the BJP leaders. Mr. Palanisamy, a staunch supporter of former Union Minister, S. Thirunavukkarasar, joined the BJP along with him in 2002. He won the Municipal Chairman election as an MGRADMK candidate in the DMK-led alliance in 2001. Differences of opinion cropped up between him and the district BJP office-bearers over release of water connections.
30 injured in accident
ERODE MARCH 29. Thirty persons travelling in a lorry were injured when it collided with a stationary bus near Manakadavu this afternoon. According to the police, there were 50 persons in the lorry which was returning to Mettur from Palani at the time of the accident. In the incident, 30 persons including 20 women sustained multiple injuries. Ten women were admitted to the Dharapuram Government Hospital and the remaining were brought in ambulances to the Government Headquarters Hospital here.
Drowning woman rescued
PONDICHERRY MARCH 29. In a brave act, two woman constables rescued a middle-aged woman, who attempted to drown herself in the sea near the Gandhi statue this evening. The woman jumped into the sea from the beach even as a large number of people watched helplessly. Beat constables alerted the All Women Police Station. Bindu and Anjuthavalli jumped into the sea and rescued her. Police said the woman was `under tension.' Her husband was summoned and she was handed over to him.
Two killed
Tuticorin March 29. Two persons were killed when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a State-owned bus at Pudukottai today. Police said Michel Thangarajan (31) and Ronald (28) died on the spot.
Two injured
Tuticorin March 29. A police head constable and a Coast Guard officer suffered injuries when their motorcycles collided head-on here today. Police said Rajaangam, the head constable, and Rajkamal, the CG officer, were admitted to a private hospital.
Cell phone stolen
Tuticorin March 29. The Kovilpatti West police today arrested Ravikumar (30) on the charge of stealing cell phone from a bus passenger on Monday. The accused had stolen the phone from Laxmanan (30) while he was alighting from a bus at the Old Bus Stand at Kovilpatti. The phone was recovered.
Three hurt
Tuticorin March 29. Three persons were injured when two lorries collided with each other on Palayamkottai Road here today. Karthik, Anbazhagan and Nagarajan suffered injuries in the accident, which took place in front of FCI godown.
Man held
Tuticorin March 29. During raids, police arrested one Arumugam while he was attempting to sell lottery tickets at Kulasekaranpattinam on Monday night. Lottery tickets of various States were seized from him. He was remanded to custody.
Search for
sand miner
Tuticorin March 29. The police have registered a case against one Mariappan for mining sand illegally from a quarry near Naalaattinputhur on Monday. The accused escaped with the load in a lorry after threatening some revenue officials, who tried to stop the vehicle. Police are searching for him.
Mass contact programme
PUDUKOTTAI MARCH 29 . A special mass contact programme will be held at Kidangivayal on April 13 from 10 a.m. A press release issued here on Monday said the Collector, R. Thiyagarajan, will preside over the programme and listen to the grievances and receive petitions from the public.
Cash award for sanitary workers
PUDUKOTTAI MARCH 29 . The Collector, R. Thiyagarajan, on Monday gave away a cash award of Rs.2,500 each to 19 sanitary workers, a sanitary supervisor and a driver attached to special grade village panchayats in recognition of their service at the tsunami-hit areas in December. A press release issued here said they are attached to special grade village panchayats of Iluppur, Arimalam, Alankudi, Ponnamaravathi and Annavasal. He also gave away a revolving fund of Rs.10, 000 to each of seven women self-help groups of Iluppur.
Revolving fund for 12 SHGs
PERAMBALUR MARCH 29 . A revolving fund of Rs.1.20 lakhs has been sanctioned to 12 self-help groups at Arumbavur near here. The Collector, D. Vivekanandan, who gave away the fund at a function held here recently, said each group was given Rs.10,000. The Primary Agricultural Cooperative Bank at Arumbavur would sanction loans to the tune of Rs.2.09 lakhs to women SHGs.

Tiruchi March 29. The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 52.26 feet today. The inflow was 185 cusecs and the discharge was 900 cusecs.
