ANANTAPUR, MARCH 29. The district credit plan for 2005-06 with an outlay of Rs. 1,192.63 crores was unveiled here on Tuesday with a lion's share of allocation (Rs. 802.81 crore) to the agriculture sector. Speaking after unveiling the credit plan the district Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, urged bankers to extend credit generously to the farming as well as alternative employment activities. She expressed concern that agriculture was turning into a gambling with deficit rainfall every year. She expressed dismay over farmers going for irrigated crops instead of irrigated dry crops in spite of repeated requests by the administration. She asked bankers to help develop horticulture by giving loans for drip and sprinkler implements as the groundwater table was depleting constantly. She explained that there was good scope for sale of fruits and fruit juices, export of meat and dairy products as the district had about 170-km long national highway. She suggested the bankers to encourage farmers set up mini cold storages by financing them. They should also assist farm ponds and alternative employment activities, she said.
