Maoists gun down TRS activist

HYDERABAD: A former Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) member, Venkatramulu Goud (48), was shot dead by suspected Maoists at Manthan Gourelli village of Yacharam mandal in Ranga Reddy district, 45 km from here, on Tuesday. The victim was going to his agricultural field on a scooter around 7.30 a.m. when the two-member action team intercepted him and shot him from point-blank range. Goud died on the spot.

He was earlier with the Telugu Desam Party and had switched over to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi only recently. Goud had been a target of naxalites since he was associated with the TDP, the Ibrahimpatnam ACP, Obul Reddy, said. However, he had not received any threats of late from the extremists.

PAC report presented in House

HYDERABAD: The Public Accounts Committee of the Assembly has recommended exemption of bridges whose construction cost has already been recovered from the purview of toll tax. However, where the cost of construction exceeds Rs.1crore, the tax collection may be continued.

The PAC's third report on the report of the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India (civil & revenue receipts) and appropriation accounts for 1996-97 and 1997-98 pertaining to Transport, Roads and Buildings department was presented to the Assembly on Tuesday.

In another case relating to misappropriation of demand drafts for Rs.15,16, 532.80 received in favour of the Executive Engineer by M.M. Shariff, the then DAO (W) R&B division, Srikakulam, the PAC wanted that the dismissal orders issued against him in 1993 be implemented forthwith.

Girijans seek special districts

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Girijan Sangham has represented to the Government urging it to declare the schedule Girijan areas as special districts and set up panchayats after integrating hamlets in the plains.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Tuesday, the Sangham wanted forming of ITDAs for Girijans living in the plains and allotment of three acres for landless Girijans after implementing the 1/70 Act.

Banking hours to be extended

Hyderabad: To facilitate payment of Service Tax, all nominated banks have agreed to extend working hours on March 31, the last day for payment of Service Tax, according to a press release issued by the Commissioner of Customs & Central Excise, Service Tax Cell. The Central Board of Excise and Customs has permitted such service providers to adjust in April, any excess service tax paid under provisional assessment before March 31, it said.

New chief for Olympic panel

VIZIANAGARAM: The Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association has nominated R. Suryanarayana as chairman of the State `Olympic Planning Committee'. His term of office will be for four years. Mr. Suryanarayana was the chief weight lifting coach in Andhra University and was also a member jury for the National Games, according to a release on Tuesday.

In-charge V-C for AU appointed

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Secretary (education) to the State Government, Paul Bhuyan, has been appointed in-charge Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, according to information received here on Tuesday. This puts an end to the speculation that the present V-C, Y.C. Simhadri, might get extension. Prof. Simhadri's term will come to an end on April 2.

GO on teacher posts soon

HYDERABAD: The Government will issue an order within two or three days and conduct counselling for 17,000 posts of selected teachers (DSC 2003). This assurance was given on Tuesday by the School Education Minister, N. Rajyalakshmi, and the Principal Secretary, S. Challappa, while interacting with office-bearers of the Andhra Pradesh Selected Teachers (DSC 2003) Association.

According to a press release, the Minister and the principal secretary held discussions with leaders of the association after it organised a "Chalo Assembly" rally to press the demand for posting orders to the selected teachers.

Presentation of degrees

TIRUPATI: The Dravidian University, Kuppam, has announced that degrees will be awarded at a special function on April 2 at 4 p.m. to candidates who have passed their B.Sc. degree examinations up to August 2004. The chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education, K.C. Reddy, will give away the certificates.

BRAOU test on April 3

HYDERABAD: The eligibility test of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University being held on April 3 will have 88,176 candidates trying out their luck at 219 centres across the State.

The examination will be held from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. The test will have 190 inmates from the Central Prison, 82 from Cherlapally, 36 from Warangal and 72 from Rajahmundry prisons appearing. All the candidates who have applied for the test can collect their hall tickets from March 31 from the centres where they have submitted the application forms.

Ugadi programmes at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: `Koil Alwar Thirumanjanam' was on Tuesday observed in the temple of Lord Venkteswara at Tirumala. The Thirumanjanam was performed as a prelude to the Ugadi festival - The Telugu New Year's Day, which falls on April 9. As part of the cleansing festival, a rich paste containing pure sandal wood powder, refined camphor, high quality turmeric and other herbal ingredients was applied to walls and pillars inside the sanctum sanctorum and other sub-temples in the complex. `Ugadi Asthanam' will be observed in the temple in connection with the Telugu New Year's Day on April 9.

In connection with the Ugadi festival, the TTD has cancelled arjitha sevas like Kalyanotsavam, Brahmotsavams, Vasanthotsavam and Unjal seva. However, the Sahasra deepalankara seva shall be performed as usual.

18 hurt in roof collapse

ANANTAPUR: Eighteen labourers were injured when the roof of a mini-theatre under construction collapsed at Tadipatri in the district on Tuesday. Five of them, whose condition was serious, were rushed to the General Hospital here.

According to the information reaching here, 30 labourers were engaged in laying the roof of the mini-theatre. The mishap occurred when the day's work was about to be completed.

CUDDAPAH: Revised valuation norms for earth work excavations will come into force from April under the National Food For Work Programme and Food Assurance Programme, vide G.O. 91 issued by the Principal Secretary, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, K. Raju.

The valuation of one cu.m. of earth work excavation in ordinary soil has been fixed at Rs. 16 plus eight kg of rice. The rate in gravel soil has been fixed 10 per cent higher than that of ordinary soil.

NELLORE: Three persons sustained injuries when the mini van in which they were travelling overturned at Dasaripalem village of Kodavalur mandal on Monday evening.

NELLORE: The police in Sydapuram have arrested 10 persons in connection with clashes at Anantamadugu colony of the mandal. All the arrested have been produced in court.

Red sanders

TIRUPATI: The forest department has seized 14 red sander logs, weighing 290 kg, near Ganugachinta of Rompicherla mandal in the district in the early hours of Tuesday. The logs were being readied for transportation in a Tata Sumo, when the officials raided the spot and seized the booty along with the vehicle. The Forest Range Officer, M. Krishnaiah, launched a hunt to nab the accused.

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati unit of the AP Balija, Kapu Sankshema Sangham requested the Revenue Divisional Officer, Tirupati, to allot site for a welfare hostel-cum-community hall for the people belonging to the community.

The State vice-president of the Sangham, O.V. Ramana and the Municipal Vice-Chancellor, B. Karunakar, who led a delegation urged the official to allot an acre skirting the ESI hospital near Bairagipatteda for the community hall which they said could also cater to the needs of those visiting Tirupati/Tirumala on pilgrimage.

Medical camp

TIRUPATI: The TTD-run SVIMS super-speciality hospital conducted a free day-long medical camp at the SC/ST colony of Krishnapuram village in Renigunta mandal on Monday. The team of doctors, including the director, G.Subramanyam, dean, B.Vengamma, medical superintendent, Raghuram Gupta and the RMO, Govind Narayana, treated 200 patients at the camp and distributed medicines free of cost.

ADILABAD: The Adilabad District Collector, J. Sudha Rani, on Tuesday ordered curbing of all unauthorised layouts in Adilabad town. She also ordered issue of notices to owners of buildings under construction to remove debris spilling on to the roads from their sites. After assuming charge as Special Officer of the Adilabad Municipality, she asked the Commissioner, D. Jageshwar, to slap the cost of removal of debris on the owners of the buildings. Talking to reporters, Ms. Sudha Rani said an action plan for town planning and sanitation is under way. About the property tax collection, she said over Rs. 4 crores had been recovered, while Rs. 40 lakhs remain in arrears.

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Association today sought Rs.2 lakhs as ex gratia for the family of Narsaiah, a farm labourer, who committed suicide because of alleged harassment by AP Transco.

K.Krishnamurthy, president, and B.Venkat, general secretary, in a statement said Narsaiah of Kalapoor village (Nizamabad district) ended his life on Monday because the officials had resorted to forcible collection of power dues. They wanted the administration to take action against the officials. They appealed to the Government to honour its promise of waiving power dues of SC/ST colonies and to provide free single bulb power supply.

Ph.D. awarded

MAHABUBNAGAR: The principal of the Government Polytechnic College here in a press note announced that the head of the mechanical engineering section of the college, K.Sudhakar, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D) in mechanical engineering by Osamnia University for his research work on "Textural characteristics and Integrity of Burnished surfaces." Professor V.S.R Murthi, Emeritus fellow of AICTE, was the guide. The principal said that Mr Sudhakar's findings would be useful for manufacturing industries.
