CHANDIGARH, MARCH 29. The Chandigarh Administration has decided to reserve 15 per cent of the seats for students belonging to economically weaker sections of the society in private schools which were allotted land at concessional rates. According to an official spokesman, this policy will become effective from the next academic session 2005-2006. It would provide equal educational opportunities to the under-privileged students to get themselves enrolled in public schools and also ensure that quality education percolates down to the needy and deprived as conceptualised by the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh and Punjab Governor, S.F. Rodrigues, he added. The students who would be enrolled under this reservation policy would have to pay a nominal fee as being charged from the students of Government Institutions. All the schools would have to advertise and select such students for admission from the academic session 2005-2006. Earlier, only five percent reservation was given to the under-privileged students in the private schools to whom the Administration allotted land on concessional rates. To ensure that proper reservation is given to deserving children, a nominee each from the Education and Social Welfare Departments of Chandigarh Administration will monitor the entire procedure adopted by the schools. A Committee has also been constituted which will fix the fee structure and payments of salaries to the teaching and other ministerial staff in these schools. The nine members of the Committee include the Deputy Commissioner-cum-Estate Officer, the Director Public Instruction (S), the Director Social Welfare, S. Mariya, Principal, DAV College, Sector 10, J. P. Singh, Principal, Saint Kabir School, Sector 26, H. Carver, Principal, Saint Stephen School, Sector 45, Maria Christi A.C. Principal, Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, Sarita Manuja, Principal, DAV Public School, Sector 8 and Surinder Tangri, Retired Principal, Governmt College of Education, Sector 20. The Committee will also look into rationalisation of fee structures specifically capitation fees and other ad hoc levies. It will submit its report within the next few days so that a final decision can be taken.
