SINGAPORE, MARCH 29. India and China have agreed to "revitalise various aspects of bilateral cooperation" in the farm sector. The agreement was reached during the discussions that the Union Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar, held with his Chinese counterpart, Du Qinglin, in Beijing. Mr. Pawar, who arrived in Beijing on Sunday for a six-day visit to China, held talks with the Minister of the International Department of the ruling Communist Party of China, Wang Jiarui, besides calling on the Chinese Vice-Premier, Hui Liangyu. According to the Indian Embassy in Beijing, the two Agriculture Ministers assessed the present state of engagement in the farm and allied sectors. The "revitalisation" of cooperation in these spheres would be sought through "mutually agreed mechanisms," the two leaders said. The "expansion and strengthening of the overall India-China trade and economic linkages" would be facilitated through such means, the two sides agreed. The "commonalities" between the independent farm sectors of the two countries and their "common objective of ensuring rapid and sustainable development of their respective and agricultural and rural economies" were emphasised during the talks.
