Ullal Darga urs tomorrow

MANGALORE, MARCH 29. The Ullal Sayyed Madani Darga is all set to hold its 18th urs for 25 days from Thursday.

This festival is held once in five years and this time the committee was expecting over 50 lakh people from all walks of life and religions to take part in the celebrations.

Known as the Ajmer of the South — Ullal Darga is a place believed by the Muslim fraternity to be of great power and in the past (1569) Sayyad Mohammad Shariful Madani, who arrived from Madina in Saudi Arabia to Ullal floating on the sea settled in the very place where the Darga stands now and performed miracles such as curing diseases.

His power of prayer is remembered by the elders of Ullal. The darga was built by the devotees in 1958 and since then the darga has seen 18 urs, says the chief of the darga, U.K. Ibrahim. One of the outstanding qualities of the darga is it has its doors open to people from all religions and Mr. Ibrahim says non-Muslims pay more visits to Darga.
