Japanese grants for two NGOs

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 29. The Japanese Government signed contracts on grants with two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the State at the Japanese Consulate here on Tuesday.

Ekta Resource Centre for Women, Madurai and Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association received about Rs. 25 lakhs and Rs. 29 lakhs respectively towards infrastructure and capacity-building.

Ekta, a Madurai-based organisation working for women's rights, plans to build a resource centre for women and youth in Kodimangalam near Madurai, and equip it with a computer, an LCD projector and a vehicle.

The TNVHA, an association of voluntary organisations working to promote health awareness, will construct a resource centre at Tambaram, for networking, training and to campaign for health-related issues.

The grants were part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP), a component of the Japanese Official Development Assistance scheme, said Masayuki Tsuchikawa, Acting Consul-General, Consulate-General of Japan. "This scheme has enabled several organisations to stabilise and consolidate their programmes for the sustainable and equitable development of the less privileged," he said.

In India, the GGP is a bilateral programme — Japanese Government makes grants after consulting the Government of India. Japanese tax-payers and the Government of Japan contribute to the fund.

Japan has made about 45 grants under the GGP for infrastructure, equipment and buildings in Tamil Nadu. "The idea is to fill critical gaps for critical mass effect," said R.S. Shanthakumar Hopper, development consultant with the Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai.
