CHENNAI, MARCH 29. A man posing as a journalist has been arrested on charges of attempting to kidnap a city social activist. The arrested man, Murugappan, approached Vishwanath Swami of Mylapore, a social activist who has been carrying on a crusade against Kalki Bhagwan, a godman, and offered to help him nail the godman. Murugappan told Mr. Swami that he was a journalist with a local paper. A second meeting followed with Mr. Swami, during which Murugappan claimed that he was working as a freelance television and newspaper journalist. Mr. Swami's enquiries with media organisations showed that no such person worked for any of them. He claimed that he subsequently received from threatening calls from Murugappan to stop the "crusade against Kalki Bhagwan." On Saturday, Mr. Murugappa called again to say he would pick up Mr. Swami from a hotel in Mylapore. Mr. Swami then lodged a complaint with the police, who arrested Murugappan. They have registered case under Sec 418 (cheating by impersonation); Sec. 506 (ii) criminal intimidation read with Sec. 120 conspiracy.
