CHENNAI, MARCH 29 . The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) will undertake improvement works in Chennai Metropolitan area at a cost of Rs.596 crores during 2005-2006, according to the Minister for Transport and Electricity, R.Viswanathan. Moving the demands for grants to his departments, Mr. Viswanathan told the Assembly today that these works would include establishment of substations and linking of major substations through high voltage cables and conversion of high voltage and low voltage overhead lines into underground cables in Chennai Corporation and urban areas. Conversion of pole structures into gas insulated ring main units in the Corporation area and conversion of steel-based pillar-boxes into fibre reinforced plastic ones also would be completed as part of the improvement works. For easy payment of electricity bills by consumers, computerisation of low tension billing and collection would be completed in the city and in all other municipal corporations and municipalities by March 31 at a cost of Rs.120 cores, he said. The TNEB had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Thermal Power Corporation for installing a 1000 MW unit at Ennore, as part of the Government's measures to boost power generation in the State.
Land for MRTS
Stressing the need for extending the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) project from Taramani to Mahabalipuram along the Buckingham Canal, Mr.Viswanathan said, " The Government is willing to transfer the lands required for the project free of cost."
