CHENNAI, MARCH 29. The city police held a test to select syces for the mounted squad at the Rajarathinam stadium here on Tuesday. More than 100 candidates took the test. M. Ravi, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North, who supervised the test, said the city police had 20 horses which needed syces. The syces take care of feeding the horses, keep them clean and attend to their health, besides cleaning the stables. The recruitment of syces comes after nearly two decades. At the last recruitment in 1984, only two syces were selected. At present, the city police employed 10 syces, while there were 20 vacancies, Mr. Ravi said. The city police has 35 horses, which is used by the mounted squad. The horses are used in ceremonial parades, crowd control, and beach patrolling They also take part in equestrian events, Mr. Ravi added.
