Internship for D.Ed. goes

MYSORE MARCH 29. Student organisations fighting against additional internship for D.Ed. students in the State have claimed that the Government has withdrawn its orders in this regard. The district secretary of the All-India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO), B. Ravi, told presspersons here on Tuesday that following the agitation by students against the introduction of additional six months internship, the Government has decided to withdraw it orders. The Government has stipulated that the internship programme should be completed within the course period of two years, he added. Besides, those who are in the second year D.Ed. course should be given opportunity to complete the internship during this academic year.

Mahatma's statue damaged

Kolar Gold Fields March 29. Miscreants damaged a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Sarvodaya Tamil School, Champion Reef, on Monday night. Based on a complaint from Dhanavani, manager of the school trust, the Champion Reef police have registered a case.

Appointed to U.S. varsity

SHIMOGA MARCH 29. K.A. Ashok Pai (in picture), consultant psychiatrist and trustee of the Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health, has been appointed Administrative Director of the International Academy of Behavioural Medicine, Counselling and Psychotherapy of Colorado Springs (University), U.S. He will continue to serve as Co-Regional Vice-President of the academy for India and SAARC countries. Dr. Pai will assume the new post at a conference of the academy in Russia in May.

`Extend track up to Hospet'

HUBLI MARCH 29. The plea to double the railway track between Vasco and Hubli and extend the same up to Hospet was reiterated here today at a meeting of the Divisional Railway Users' Consultative Committee. Raising the issue, Babulal Jain of Hospet, who has been elected member of the National Railway Users' Consultative Committee and the Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee along with Damodar Rathi of Bijapur, said the doubling of the track will help in transporting iron ore from the Hospet-Bellary area. He told presspersons that the railway authorities have sent a proposal to this effect to the Railway Board.

Water from Koyna dam sought

BELGAUM MARCH 29. The State Government has requested the Maharashtra Government to release 2 tmc of water from the Koyna dam into the Krishna to supply drinking water to villages on the banks of the river in Chikkodi and Athani taluk. The Minister for Agriculture Marketing and district in charge, Prakash B. Hukkeri, said the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has written to his Maharashtra counterpart, Vilasrao Deshmukh, in this regard. Mr. Singh has also requested Mr. Deshmukh to release 2 tmc of water out of Karnataka's share of 4 tmc under the Dudhganga inter-State project from the Kalammawadi reservoir into the Dudhganga to ease the drinking water crisis likely during April and May, Mr. Hukkeri said.

Man, woman commit suicide

Kolar Gold Fields March 29. A man and a woman reportedly committed suicide in Marikuppam police limits today. The police gave their names as Nagaraj of Kodigenahalli and Stella. According to B.N.S. Reddy, Superintendent, KGF, Nagaraj served a jail term for the murder of his wife a few years ago. After his release, he went to work in a private firm in Bangalore and reportedly had an affair with Stella, who was married and had three children. Three months ago, she left her family to live with Nagaraj here. Stella reportedly committed suicide in their house on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, Nagaraj committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in a farm near their house. The Marikuppam police are investigating the case.
