CHENNAI, MARCH 29. A final round of contributions was made from `The Hindu Relief Fund' to the Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry Governments. A demand draft for Rs. 1.2 crores was handed over to the Chief Secretary to the Tamil Nadu Government, Lakshmi Pranesh, at the Secretariat here today. She thanked The Hindu and its readers for the gesture. With this, the contribution to Tamil Nadu from `The Hindu Relief Fund' reached Rs. 6.2 crores. On Monday, a draft for Rs. 25 lakhs was presented to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in Hyderabad, taking the State's share in the fund to Rs. 1 crore. Thanking the newspaper for the assistance, he said: "It is a noble gesture on the part of The Hindu and its large number of readers, reflecting their social commitment towards the welfare of their fellow human beings." Similarly, a draft for Rs. 25 lakhs was handed over to the Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, at his office in the Union Territory on Monday. With that, the contribution to Pondicherry rose to Rs. 1 crore. In addition, a draft for Rs. 2 crores was presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, for tsunami relief and rehabilitation work in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, followed by another draft for Rs. 1 crore to the islands' Lt. Governor Ram Kapse. A draft for Rs. 1.5 crores was also handed over to the Kerala Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, for relief works in that State. With generous contributions pouring in from the readers and well-wishers of the newspaper in the wake of an appeal made soon after the December 26 tsunami, Rs. 12.7 crores has been distributed from `The Hindu Relief Fund' to Tamil Nadu, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry, based on an assessment of the damage by Central teams.
