KOCHI, MARCH 29. The city witnessed many traffic snarls on Tuesday, the second day in succession. The situation was worst in the roads leading to the Ernakulam South and North overbridges and along the M.G. Road. Bumper-to-bumper traffic in these roads held up traffic for many hours during morning and evening peak hours. The situation was not much different during the afternoon. Monday's traffic hold ups were attributed to the procession taken out by the DYFI and the culvert work that is moving on at a snail's pace along the Chitoor road. Traffic has been banned through the road because of the work. The unprecedented number of shoppers along M.G. Road and in other commercial areas added to the melee today. They were engaged in last-minute shopping, since traders have given a strike call from Wednesday in protest against the implementation of VAT. With vehicles that were to go through Chitoor Road passing through the M.G. Road, the stretch literally came to a standstill on many occasions. Even side roads were clogged. A couple of minor accidents in these roads and in Sahodaran Ayyappan Road made matters worse.
