K.T. Thomas panel suggestions to be implemented soon

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 29. The Government will soon implement the recommendations of the Kerala Police Performance and Accountability Commission in phases, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has said.

He was inaugurating a multi-storeyed barracks for the Armed Reserved Camp at Nandavanam here on Monday.

Mr. Chandy said his Government was in favour of speedy implementation of the recommendations submitted by the commission headed by the former Supreme Court Judge K.T. Thomas on March 21.

The Government will implement it in either two or three phases. The recommendations which need to be examined in detail, will be implemented in the subsequent phases.

Police stations

The Government will construct buildings for police stations wherever space is available. Quarters will be constructed wherever needed in a time-bound manner under the scheme taken up for modernising the police force, he said.

Designed by the Habitat Group, the four-storeyed building housing the barracks was built at a cost of Rs.2.09 crores. The ground floor provides space for parking and as many as 300 police personnel can stay in the other three floors of the building.

Three television lounges, three visitor's lounge, three kitchens and 30 toilets have been constructed in the 44,000-sq.ft. building.

New building for station

Mr. Chandy said the Southern Railways had cleared the construction of a new building for the Thampanoor police station at the existing location. The police station will be housed in the ground floor of the two-storeyed building to be constructed by the Kerala Police Housing and Construction. The first floor of the proposed building will house the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Railways.

The local legislator, B. Vijayakumar, who chaired the function, urged Mr. Chandy to initiate steps to bifurcate the Fort police station and create a new one at the Karamana police station. He also wanted the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Traffic (South) to be shifted to Karamana. The Government should acquire the land of the Education Department and house both the offices of the Assistant Commissioner of Traffic (South) and the Karamana police station at Karamana to mitigate the problems faced by the citizens, he added.

The Mayor, J. Chandra, the Councillor, Palayam Rajan, the DGP, Raman Srivastava and senior officials attended the meeting.

The City Police Commissioner, Balram Kumar Upadhyay welcomed the gathering and the Deputy Commandant, P. Vijayakumar, proposed the vote of thanks.
