THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. March 29. The University of Kerala in its budget for 2005-06 has announced, among other things, the institution of 16 new postgraduate courses, a School of Performing Visual Arts and the elevation of the Centre for Adult Continuing Education and Extension (CACEE) into a department. The convener of the finance committee, K. Mohankumar, today presented the budget to the syndicate. For the first time in Kerala, an MA Teacher Education will be set up at the CACEE in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning. It will be a distance learning programme. M.Ed courses will be started in the Teacher Education Colleges at Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha.
Private registration
The university plans to re-introduce private registration for postgraduate courses. Students of postgraduate courses and researchers will be allowed to earn while they learn through participation in teaching, conduct of examinations, invigilation and other seasonal administrative work. A trial project will be drawn up for this. Two science departments will be selected to apply for ISO certification. A special officer will be appointed to study the feasibility of instituting para-medical courses in association with hospitals within the university's affiliation territory. A College for Applied Sciences will be set up to function in the self-financing mode. A national centre for bioinformatics and a centre for the development of the Malayalam language will be set up. A marine bio-diversity centre will be opened at the recently acquired property at Akkulam. This will also function as an off-campus laboratory for the Department of Aquatic Biology.
Media-oriented course
The budget contains proposals for setting up a new media-oriented postgraduate course in Malayalam and Communicative English, an M.Phil programme in Visual Communication and an M.Sc programme in Geo-informaton Systems and Remote Sensing.
At the Department of Physical Education too a postgraduate programme will be instituted.
Postgraduate courses will be set up in Convergence Media Studies, Computer Video Gaming Technology and in Digital Film and Video Production in association with the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (CDIT).
Postgraduate courses in Women's Studies, Chemical Biotechnology, Education Management, Translation and Transmatics, Functional Malayalam and in Printing Technology will also be introduced.
The university plans to set up new UITs at Mannanthala, Eroor, Thrikkadavoor, Varkala and Aryanad. MSW programmes, with emphasis on Geriatrics and Disaster Management will be started at the UITs.
Health club
The budget also envisages digitising records of previous years' examinations and the setting up of a health club at Karyavattom with the cooperation of the Sports Council.
The budget expects an income of Rs.136.74 crores and an expenditure of 148.10 crores. Internal resource mobilisation is expected to be Rs.27.27 crores.
