BANGALORE, MARCH 29. The Jnanabharathi police have registered a case against Siddalingaiah, Dalit poet and Director, Department of Kannada Studies, Bangalore University, on a sexual harassment complaint by a colleague. M. Sumithra, a Kannada lecturer in Bangalore University, had lodged a private complaint in the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on March 21 that Dr. Siddalingaiah was sexually harassing her. On the directions of the court, the Jnanabharathi police registered a case against Dr. Siddalingaiah and C.M. Rajanna, a Ph.D. scholar, who has also been named in the complaint, on March 23. The police have registered a case under sections 509 (act, word, or gesture intended to damage the modesty of women), 500 (defamation), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 426 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code. A few students supporting Dr. Siddalingaiah boycotted classes and staged a demonstration on the Jnanabharathi campus on Tuesday following a report in a Kannada tabloid on the alleged sexual harassment.
