NEW DELHI, MARCH 29. The Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, has directed the traffic police to intensify the drive against faulty registration number plates following complaints about increased use of "fancy" number plates which are not legible. Dr. Paul said several social organisations and individuals had expressed concern about use of registration number plates in vehicles which were difficult to read even from a small distance. This, despite the fact that all vehicle owners have been asked to strictly follow the directions regarding size of the number plates and the format of the numbers written on it under the Motor Vehicles Act. Apart from the drive against faulty number plates, Dr. Paul has directed the local police to instruct the manufacturers of number plates to follow the Motor Vehicles Act/Rules, or else they would be prosecuted for the offence. A press release issued by the Police Commissioner's office read that the drive would be on till visible changes were noticed on the roads. It would also apply for the vehicles entering the Capital from the neighbouring cities. Also, Dr. Paul has directed the traffic police to prepare a plan to check the unauthorised use of VIP beacons. A decision in this regard would be reached at in consultation with the departments concerned, including the Transport Commissioner and the Delhi government officials.
