Balbir, lone Indian medallist

NEW DELHI, MARCH 30. Balbir Singh won the lone bronze medal as the Indian boxing team returned on Wednesday with nothing much to boast about from its trip to Azerbaijan.

India fielded six boxers in the Prof. Chowdhary Cup international tournament in Baku from March 22 to 28, but failed to strike as much as it had wished to. In the 48kg category, Balbir pushed his way into the semifinals, before losing out.

The experiment with moving the Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Mohammed Ali Qamar (51kg) and Akhil Kumar (54kg), to one step up the weight ladder, failed to realise any results. — Our Sports Reporter
