JERUSALEM: A former Israeli Cabinet Minister was sentenced to five years in prison on Wednesday after being convicted of trying to smuggle 32,000 Ecstasy drug tablets into Israel from the Netherlands. Gonen Segev admitted to the smuggling charges as part of a plea bargain last month. Under the deal, Segev was fined the equivalent of $27,500 (euro20,800), and an additional two years of the sentence were suspended, pending good behaviour. Segev, who is a paediatrician, admitted to the charges after earlier claiming he thought the pills were candy and not hallucinogenic party drugs. Segev also was convicted of accepting bribes and using an expired diplomatic passport from his time as Minister to try to get through Dutch airport security on April 8, 2004, while carrying the Ecstasy tablets.
