BRUSSELS, MARCH 30. The European Commission said on Wednesday it was happy with commitments made by the U.S. nominee to head the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz, at a meeting with European Finance Chiefs in Brussels. The European Union (E.U.) Enlargement Commissioner, Olli Rehn, was satisfied with what he heard from Mr. Wolfowitz, the U.S. Deputy Defence Secretary who is expected to be confirmed as the next head of the World Bank, a spokeswoman for the commissioner said. ``He was happy with everything he had heard from Mr. Wolfowitz concerning free trade, and also on poverty reduction and development policy,'' said the spokeswoman. The U.S. President, George W. Bush's nomination of Mr. Wolfowitz, a key architect of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, was met with some cool responses from Europe although E.U. leaders appeared resigned to accepting him at a Brussels summit last week.
