CHENNAI, MARCH 30. Tata Elxsi today launched its design and development centre here.

The centre will initially focus on providing networking services to customers in India as well as globally. Chennai will be the third centre after Bangalore and Trivandrum.

The Managing Director, Madhukar Dev, told presspersons that the Chennai facility would focus on wireless technology - both wireless LAN and long-range wireless infrastructure.

Tata Elxsi offered end-to-end design and development services ranging from architecture design to production of cutting-edge products in broadband access, IP networks, convergence and home networking.

The Head of the Design and Development Centre in Chennai, Jayen Gourishankar, said networking was a niche technology area and finding the right skill sets was a constant process.

The company was planning to recruit around 100 specialists in the next three months and increase the number to around 500 gradually.

Mr. Madhukar Dev said there was an emerging trend for semiconductor chips becoming more powerful. People wanted to remain connected all the time. '

He also hoped that soon there would be convergence in technologies.

The Chennai Research and Development centre would meet the requirement of convergence, he added.

The company has four divisions namely product design services, design engineering services, visual computing labs, design tools and system integration.

It anticipates revenues from systems integration to decline over the next 12-18 months, while visual computing division is expected to grow exponentially, Mr. Madhukar Dev said.

Tata Elxsi services addressed the needs of product manufacturers across layers of hardware and software, ranging from intelligent silicon design and micro coding of network processors to developing protocols, security, he added.
