New drug authority set up

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 30. The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has replaced the Pharmacopoeia Committee — responsible for setting the standards and regulating the quality of drugs — by the more empowered Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission.

The Commission, to be headed by the Union Health Secretary, consists of a high-power scientific committee that is expected to meet shortly.

A National Pharmaco Vigilance Programme has been initiated and two meetings had been held since last year. Four regional offices had been set up under the programme to monitor the quality of drugs.
