MUMBAI, MARCH 30. Dance bars in Maharashtra, except in Mumbai, are being ordered to close down immediately since they had "ruptured the cultural fabric of the State and the Government had lacked the wherewithal to enforce rules that governed them." Replying to a calling attention motion in the Assembly, the Deputy Chief Minister, R.R. Patil, who holds the home portfolio, said that dance bars had flourished in different cities and district towns of Maharashtra, while many of them did not have entertainment licences and were violating rules that regulated restaurants and liquor bars. Mr. Patil said the Government had insufficient police personnel to strictly enforce the rules in other towns of Maharashtra. However, the police could control the bars in Mumbai. The Government would consider even doing away with the dance bars altogether in the State, Mr. Patil added. He said the Government would form a committee to recommend norms for Mumbai's dance bars popularly known as "ladies' bars" where patrons are entertained by dancing women. But MLAs alleged that the bars were also centres of flesh trade.
