Orissa MLAs seek Governor's intervention
By Our Staff Reporter
BHUBANESWAR,
MARCH 30.
The Opposition legislators of Orissa today approached the Governor, Rameshwar Thakur, seeking his intervention to restore normality in the Assembly.
The MLAs, who stayed firm in their stand for the fifth day boycotting the Assembly proceedings whenever the Speaker, Maheswar Mohanty, was in the chair, submitted a memorandum to Mr. Thakur urging him to intervene in the matter to see that the House functioned as per democratic norms.
The Opposition members, who are peeved at Mr. Mohanty's remarks against the Congress legislator, Taraprasad Bahinipati, during zero-hour on March 23, have announced that they will not attend the proceedings till he officially expressed "regret" for his action.
The Opposition legislators also showed their resentment outside the House today and boycotted the lunch that was hosted by the Speaker on the Assembly premises.
In the memorandum, the legislators said the Opposition played a very important role in a Parliamentary form of democracy. Parliamentary system becomes meaningless if the Opposition is gagged, they said.
The legislators further blamed the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, for his "failure'' to discharge his functions.
