Bharathi, Swadeshi mills takeover under way, says Rangasamy

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 30. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said today that the Administration had taken steps to take over the Bharathi Mills and the Swadeshi Cotton Mills, which are now under the control of the National Textiles Corporation.

Replying to a question tabled jointly by R.V. Janakiraman and S.P. Sivakumar (DMK), A M Krishnamoorthy (BJP) and T Jayamoorthy (Ind) in the Assembly, he said that though Rs 39 crores would have to be paid to the National Textiles Corporation for the takeover of the two mills by the Pondicherry administration, he had requested the Union Textiles Ministry to bear the commitment.

He said that these two mills would be attached to the Pondicherry Textiles Corporation (PTC).

Mr. Rangasamy said that the decision to take over the two mills was taken on the recommendation of an expert committee.

He said that the government had also initiated steps to modernise the AFT mill so that its working could be improved. The 10-member committee constituted under the chairmanship of the Secretary to the department of Industries and Commerce for toning up the AFT mill had submitted its report.
