Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MARCH 30. A. Anbalagan (AIADMK) today caused a flutter in the Assembly when he suddenly flaunted a sari and a blouse bit in support of his claim that these garments made available to the poor by the Government were not products of PONTEX (the apex cooperative handloom weavers body). He also said that the quality of the garments was not up to the mark. There was also a spate of complaints from the treasury benches and the BJP member, A.M. Krishnamoorthy that the free garments were not being made available in time to the poor. R. Nalamaharajan (Cong.) said that the consignment sent to his constituency in Karaikal for distribution fell short of the requirements. He said the short supply was an embarrassment to the government. Intervening, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy said the making of garments was assigned to the PONTEX to assure handloom weavers of regular work. The Welfare Minister M. Chandirakasu said that he would go into the complaints, as there should be proper implementation of the scheme. Earlier, Mr. Chandirakasu, explaining the features of the free garments scheme for people below the poverty line, said that 88,862 persons were covered under the scheme. The government was distributing a sari and a blouse bit and a lungi and towel to every couple. A sum of Rs 4.38 crores was being spent annually for implementation of the scheme.
