HYDERABAD,
MARCH 30.
There was uneven response to the call for a `trade bandh' in the State on Wednesday to protest against the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) from April 1. While most retail shops remained open, the bandh had some effect on the wholesale shops and dealers, many of whom downed shutters.
A. Vijay Kumar, president, Andhra Pradesh Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Trade, said that traders were not in principle against VAT but wanted it to be implemented uniformly over the entire country. He also wanted uniformity in rates and immediate end to other taxes such as CST, toll tax, entry tax and others. He criticised the rise in tax rates for "common man's" commodities and said that it was impractical to impose VAT on some States when others had decided against joining it.
