Leaders condole death

HYDERABAD, MARCH 30. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in a condolence message, said O.V. Vijayan was known for his creative and thought-provoking cartoon. His contribution to the field of cartoon-journalism was outstanding.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, described Vijayan as the prince of letters and lines. While his writings won laurels in Kerala, his cartoons were appreciated outside Kerala and even abroad. He was in the forefront of writers who modernised Malayalam prose. He made rural Kerala, its people and their lives the central characters of his work and did not allow himself to be influenced by Western ideas. His social criticism couched in humour was effective. He influenced the thoughts of an entire generation, Mr. Chandy added.
