AHMEDABAD, MARCH 30: In a move that has surprised political observers, the Gujarat BJP president, Rajendrasinh Rana, was summoned to New Delhi on the eve of the all-important meeting of dissident leaders with the party president, L.K. Advani. BJP legislators in Gujarat are reading enormous significance in Mr. Rana's sudden departure for New Delhi. Sources close to dissident leaders point out that Mr. Rana's presence in New Delhi and at the breakfast meeting of the senior dissident leaders with Mr. Advani on Thursday could serve as intimation of an important decision in the offing. Senior dissident leaders when contacted sought to underplay Mr. Rana's dash to the capital, saying that he was indeed expected at the breakfast meeting but no formal announcement had been made. Dissident leaders also sought to dispel any significance in the luncheon meeting the former Chief Ministers, Keshubai Patel and Suresh Mehta, had with the former Union Minister, Kashiram Rana. Reliable sources are, however, quick to add that in the eventuality of a decision in favour of the dissidents, Mr. Kashiram Rana is likely to emerge as the compromise candidate. Legislators close to Mr. Keshubhai Patel, however, are also suggesting the name of Vallabh Kathiriya as a possible candidate.
