Bellary
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, MARCH 30. The district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken strong exception to the Government's decision to dissolve the City Municipal Council and appoint an administrator to run the Bellary City Corporation. The corporation was constituted last year but elections to the corporation council are yet to be held. The president of the district unit, Janardhan Reddy, told presspersons here on Tuesday that he will take the issue to court. His reaction came in the wake of the appointment of the Deputy Commissioner as the civic body's administrator.
Notification
According to a notification issued by the Urban Development Secretariat dated March 28, elections could not be held within six months, i.e. before March 27, from the date of declaration of the corporation as required under Section 503 (4) of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976, as the delimitation of wards, as per the 2001 Census, could not be completed. In view of this, the period for completion of elections has been extended by six months and the civic body has been dissolved. The notification said that the administrator will perform the duties and functions of the corporation till the elections are completed and the body is duly constituted. Mr. Reddy said that it was wrong on the part of the Government to dissolve the civic body and appoint an administrator when the present body has 15 months left of its five-year term. He criticised the Government for taking an anti-democratic stand when it was at fault of not completing the delimitation of wards. Blaming the Congress for the developments, he said that it was being done as the Congress was scared that it will not win the elections.
Alleged
He alleged that the Congress leaders were unable to tolerate development works taken up by the BJP-controlled City Municipal Council in coordination with the MP and MLA. Mr. Reddy urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to reconsider the decision and allow the present body to continue till the elections are held. He said that if the Government fails to rectify the mistake, the BJP will launch a multi-pronged agitation. G. Somashekar Reddy, the outgoing Mayor, and several other party councillors were present.
