IIS officer shoots himself

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 30. A 43-year-old Indian Information Service (IIS) officer, Ajay Mandalaus, allegedly shot himself in his house at Mukherji Nagar in North Delhi on Monday night. A suicide note was recovered from the spot.

The tragedy came to light when Kanchan Prasad, who is also an IIS and presently posted as secretary to the Governor of Mizoram, reached the house of her husband, Mr. Mandalaus, around 8-45 p.m. She found that though the lights in the house were off, the television in Mr. Mandalaus' room was on. When she switched on the lights, she saw her husband lying unconscious, bleeding from the right temple. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The police said Mr. Mandalaus had shot himself with a pistol registered in his father's name.

According to the police, in a suicide note recovered from the house, Mr. Mandalaus said he was taking the extreme step because he was under depression due to some breathing problem and had been on leave for the past four months. He also was to undergo an operation on Wednesday. His wife, Kanchan, lives in Mizoram with her son and daughter, while Mr. Mandalaus worked as a general manager with the Handloom and Handicrafts Export Council of India.
