Inter board's warning

HYDERABAD: The last working day of this academic year for Intermediate colleges is Mach 31. The colleges will reopen on June 1, according to a press release issued by the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE).

The board has also warned colleges against conducting any classes. The premises of junior colleges should not be used for any other purpose during summer vacation. Colleges should also not make any admissions for the academic year 2005-06 by way of any entrance test or other tests until the admission schedule for the year is announced.

Feuding fishermen `poison' pond

ANANTAPUR: A dispute between fishermen of two villages over sharing of aqua wealth allegedly led to poisoning of the pond, killing the fish in it.

According to information reaching here, fishermen of Chennamur were rearing fish in Kamaraju Kunta, a pond located between Chennamur and Medapuram of the Chennekothapalli mandal.

The then Penukonda legislator, Paritala Ravindra, had brokered an understanding over sharing the wealth following a dispute last year. However, differences cropped up again and one of the aggrieved sides allegedly poisoned the pond last night, killing an estimated 70,000 fish.

MPEOs call off stir

HYDERABAD: Mandal Parishad Extension Officers (MPEOs), who were on indefinite hunger strike for the last four days, called off their agitation on Wednesday following an assurance by the Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy.

According to a press release issued by the MPEOs' Welfare Association, Mr. Reddy was said to have told its leaders that 15 weightage marks and regular postings would be given to MPEOs who had studied degree, Inter and SSC courses. They would also be given contract appointments in different departments. Orders to this effect would be issued, the Minister stated. T. Veerabhadram, CPI(M) legislator, offered lime juice to the fasting MPEOs.

Godavari canals to be closed

Kakinada: Godavari canals in Godavari Eastern and Central deltas will be closed for maintenance from April 7, according to Executive Engineers of both the Eastern and Central divisions. They advised sarpanches, farmers and officials concerned to draw water in full to all drinking water tanks in the district before April 7.

Protest against worker's death

KHAMMAM: Workers of granite units took out a procession in the town as a fellow worker was killed in an accident at the work place on Wednesday.

According to reports, Rambabu (22), died as he suffered severe injuries when he was trapped under a stone while unloading it from a lorry. The protesters demanded payment of ex gratia to the bereaved family.

Coalminer killed in accident

KHAMMAM: A coal-filler was killed in an accident in Venkatesh Khani on Tuesday. According to reports reaching here, Bolla Venkat (50), working in the second shift, was injured as he was hit by a coal tub. He was shifted to hospital immediately, where he succumbed to injuries. The SCCL Deputy General Manager (personnel), A.P. Raju, said that the bereaved family was given an immediate compensation of Rs. 25,000.

LIC staff not to strike work

HYDERABAD: Members of the All-India LIC Employees' Federation in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are not participating in the one-day strike tomorrow.

Class I officers had already deferred their proposed strike, the federation announced here on Wednesday.

P. Mahesh, general secretary, in a statement, alleged that the strike was because of the management's instructions to branch offices not to open cash counters on March 31. He demanded that the management come out with concessions to policy-holders.

TDP activist arrested

CUDDAPAH: The police arrested a TDP activist, Subbarayudu, and recovered seven cartridges from him during raids in Nandimandalam in Pendlimarry mandal in the early hours of Wednesday.

Three Sub-Inspectors and several policemen searched the house of a Congress functionary, Bhaskar Reddy, in the faction-ridden Kothur village but did not find any arms or lethal weapons. The raids were part of an exercise to curb factionism, police said.

Four schoolchildren `drowned'

NIZAMABAD: Four school-going children aged between 10 and 12 were suspected to have drowned in Ratham Cheruvu on the outskirts of Bheemgal mandal headquarter on Wednesday.

According to information reaching here, the children went to the tank in the evening and were drowned as they were not so conversant with swimming.

Liquor shop applicants' protest

NIZAMABAD: Applicants for liquor licences staged a dharna and a rasta roko at Armoor, demanding that the Government refund their deposit amounts immediately.

Before embarking on an agitation they met at the R&B Guest House in the morning and discussed a plan to pressure the Government to return their money.

Expressing fear in the wake of reports that 30 per cent of their deposited amount would be remitted to the Income Tax Department, they demanded that whole amount be given back as it was without any deduction.

The applicants went in a procession to the Mandal Revenue Office, where they staged a dharna. Subsequently, at the Nizam Sagar canal bridge, they staged the rasta roko for 30 minutes.

Case against MRO

CUDDAPAH: A case under Prevention of Atrocities Against SC/ST Act was registered against the Kamalapuram MRO, Vinayakam, on Tuesday night.

The case was booked following a complaint by three Dalits of Gandlur Colony in Kamalapuram town that the MRO abused them in the name of caste when they sought sanction of house site pattas, according to the Kamalapuram Sub-Inspector, Prasad. The MRO, however, denied the charge.

Sangareddy: Neerudi Durgaiah (29), a surrendered naxal, was killed by Maoists on Tuesday in Rajpet village of Kowdipally mandal in Medak district. Durdaiah, who left the movement, is running a poultry shop in his native village. At around 9.30 unidentified persons shot him from point blank range, killing him on the spot. A note purportedly written and signed by Mallesh, member, Local Guerrilla Squad of the CPI (Maoist), termed Durgaiah police informer.

Traders observe bandh

CHITTOOR: Traders observed bandh and took out a rally here on Wednesday protesting against the implementation of VAT from April 1. K.U. Maheswar, the district president Chamber of Commerce and Trade Federation, said that only 21 States have agreed to implement VAT in the country as such it was not possible for uniform tax. Besides, he demanded that turnover limit for small business people has to be enhanced from 5 lakhs to 10 lakhs, according to the recommendation of the high level committee.

MADANAPALLE: The RDO, K. Siva Reddy, who took over as special officer of Madanapalle Municipality said that drinking water would be supplied in all areas. If necessary, water tankers would be pressed into service and new bore wells would be sunk. The Municipal Commissioner, Nagabhushanam, DE, Perumal, and others, were present.

Bank hours

extended

CUDDAPAH: Syndicate Bank will accept direct taxes up to 8 p.m. on March 31, the Lead District Manager, K. Sudhir, said on Wednesday. Taxes could be paid on Thursday at the bank's main branches at Cuddapah, Kurnool and Anantapur and branches at Cuddapah station road, Budhawarpet in Kurnool, Nandyal, Adoni and Hindupur, he said in a statement.

School for

the poor

CUDDAPAH: The ZP Chairman, K. Suresh Babu, laid the foundation stone for a residential school for poor students being built by Shriram Social Welfare Trust, Chennai, at Chemmumiyapet here on Wednesday. Shriram Chits depicted their service motto by setting up the school, Mr. Suresh Babu, said. The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said 1,000 poor students would be enrolled in the school. The SP, V.C. Sajjanar, and others were present.

US degree for

SKU professor

Anantapur: The International University of Washington has awarded a Degree of Doctor in Literature (D.Litt) to Prof. C.S. Rayudu, the Head of Commerce Department in Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) near here. His research work on `Yoga teach - Prana treat' has secured him the rare distinction. K. Ramasubba Reddy of National Informatics Centre, the district convenor of Lok Satta, A. Venkateswar Rao, K.V.S. Chalapati Reddy of INTUC complimented the professor.
