HYDERABAD, MARCH 30. The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has accused the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) of stalling the Assembly business for 24 hours during the Budget session causing a loss of Rs. 1.15 crores to the exchequer. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the Government Chief Whip, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, accused the Leader of the Opposition, N. Chandrababu Naidu, of misusing the time of the House for cheap publicity. Important public issues did not come up for discussion due to the TDP's `adamant attitude'. There was no discussion on the excise policy or VAT and on the budget demands for social welfare.
Baseless charges
Apart from making wild accusations and reading out half-truths published in a section of the press, the TDP could not substantiate its argument on its allegations on corruption in irrigation tenders. Even the points raised by its leaders were just a repeat of their speeches in the previous session. Another feature of the TDP's performance was its attempt to malign the Speaker by levelling charges of favouritism whenever it failed to raise the quality of debate in the House. Recalling that the CLP's letter to Mr. Naidu expressing apprehensions that the TDP would disrupt the budget session of the Assembly, Mr. Reddy said these fears were proved correct. He regretted that even the Communist parties wasted the time of the House.
