Uttaranchal
By Our Staff Correspondent
DEHRA DUN, MARCH 30. The three-day bandh call by the Confederation of All-India Traders in protest against the introduction of the new Value Added Tax (VAT) regime evoked a near total response in Uttaranchal today. All markets remained closed for the day. The vegetable vendors made a killing by doubling the prices of vegetables and fruits yesterday itself as people flocked to stock up for the next three days. "The traders should be ashamed for doubling the vegetable costs as they are on a three day strike for their own cause," said a resident Navneet Ghildiyal. People wanting to buy medicines were badly hit as chemists too downed the shutters. "Do the traders have any legal or moral right to hold the consumers to ransom?" asked Sushila Singh waiting to buy medicines for her ailing father.
