By Our Staff Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MARCH 30. There is simmering discontent within the party against the Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh. This time over granting of liquor contract to a person from outside the State and said to be close to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav. A group of district presidents of the Punjab Congress have been camping here for the past couple of days meeting senior Congress leaders to convey their resentment against Captain Singh. "We have met the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, who is also in charge of Punjab Affairs and Motilal Vora and have sought an appointment with the party president, Sonia Gandhi,'' Tara Singh Sandhu, district president of Moga, told reporters here today. Criticising the Chief Minister for his "autocratic" manner of functioning, Dr. Sandhu said they have sought cancellation of the liquor contract and a revaluation of the memberships. Mr. Mukherjee gave them a patient hearing besides assuring them of early intervention. He also promised to take up the matter with the party High Command on her return from Rae Bareli. The controversy began after senior party leader, Jagmeet Singh Brar, wrote a `confidential' letter to Mr. Mukherjee pointing out the discrepancies in granting of liquor contract leading to a loss of several hundred crores of rupees to the State. The letter, however, was leaked to media, which was followed by a call for "political boycott'' of Mr. Brar and a signature campaign to ratify his recommendation. "The Chief Minister managed to get the signatures of only 22 MLAs and there was a negative reaction to his call,'' Dr. Sandhu said, adding that even the former Chief Minister, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, described the move as "unfortunate". The workers are also planning to meet Congress leaders like Ambika Soni, Ahmed Patel and V. George. In the meantime, a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party has been convened at Chandigarh tomorrow to discuss the issue.
