Project to help unemployed proposed in budget

ALAPPUZHA, MARCH 30. A project aimed at solving the problem of unemployment and proposals to construct houses for the homeless and a new drainage system in the town are the highlights of the Alappuzha Municipality's budget for 2005-'06, which was presented in the council today.

The budget envisages revenue of Rs 37. 20 crores and expenditure of Rs 36.37 crores, leaving a surplus of Rs. 83 lakhs.

UDF boycott

The UDF councillors in the municipality boycotted the council and staged a dharna in front of the council hall alleging that certain statistics in the budget had not been submitted for approval of the finance committee.

The budget has earmarked Rs 2.5 crores for a project to provide financial help to the unemployed youth for finding self-employment.

The project proposes too help 2,000 unemployed youth. The help of financial institutions would be sought to implement the project.

The budget has set aside Rs. 75 lakhs to implement the first stage of a project to construct houses for all homeless in the town.

A sum of Rs. 50 lakhs has been earmarked for construction of a drainage system.

In addition to this, an amount of Rs. 40 lakhs has been earmarked for the total sanitation project.

The budget also proposes to implement a project to provide drinking water to residents in certain areas who do not get water from the public water distribution system at present.

A sum of Rs. 30 lakhs has been earmarked for the purpose.

The budget has allocated Rs. 50 lakhs for development of tourism in the town.

It also proposes to introduce a project to provide milk and bread to children up to the age of five years of below poverty line (BPL) families. The budget has set aside Rs. 20 lakhs for the purpose.

The budget proposes to complete the first stage of construction work of the Alappuzha municipal stadium in 2005-`06. It has earmarked Rs. 50 lakhs for the purpose.
