TUMKUR, MARCH 30. Basavaraju Angadi, member of the Tumkur City Municipal Council, on Wednesday urged the Government not to ignore the plea by farmers of the command area of the Baddihalli Tank to save the tank. Addressing presspersons at Baddihalli where a group of farmers staged a protest against using the tank for other purposes, Mr. Angadi said the tank must be saved at any cost. Criticising the Government for demolishing part of the tank-bund despite protests by farmers, Mr. Angadi said the Kendriya Vidyalaya here can acquire private land to construct a building and it cannot use the tank-bed for the purpose.
Protest
Mr. Angadi said farmers protested in 1998 when a site on the tank bed was given to the Karnataka Electricity Board. The board, however, considered the pleas by farmers and surrendered the land and acquired the land offered by three farmers. The Kendriya Vidyalaya must follow suit. He brushed aside an argument that the Centre, which has provided Rs. 4 crores for the vidyalaya campus, will not allow it to spend part of the money on acquiring land. Rules must be amended to facilitate acquisition of land for the campus, he said. Narasappa, a farmer, said they will not allow the tank-bed to be used for other purposes.
