BANGALORE, MARCH 30. V.S. Ugrappa of the Congress on Tuesday took the Government to task in the Legislative Council for ignoring Tumkur and Chitradurga districts and highlighting only the backwardness of the Hyderabad Karnataka region and seeking special assistance from the Centre to overcome regional imbalances. Participating in a debate on the budget proposals, Mr. Ugrappa, who hails from Pavagada taluk in Tumkur district, said the Government should also take up the cause of the district when it approaches the Centre for amending Article 371. Mr. Ugrappa alleged that the coalition Government is not committed to the cause of social justice. He charged the Government with fleecing the poor from the Scheduled Castes, who have been allocated funds under the Ganga Kalyan Scheme. He said that a beneficiary of the scheme in Pavagada taluk has been asked to pay Rs. 10,000 for digging a borewell though the Government has allocated a subsidy of Rs. 65,000 to her. The contractors, he alleged, have increased the borewell digging cost to fleece the beneficiaries of such a scheme.
Funds
The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramiah, should take steps to allocate more funds for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and other backward classes, he said.
