THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 30. The probe into the SSLC question paper leak is turning into a farce, with the Government providing all opportunities to the real culprits to escape, the Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, has alleged. At a press conference here today, he said the manner in which the question papers were leaked out and widely distributed in the State clearly indicated that the leak was not meant merely to help some students score high marks in the examinations. The intention was certainly to sabotage the Grading System newly introduced for the SSLC. Everything pointed to the fact that the people thriving on the business of selling guides to the students must have had a hand in the question paper leak. It was their business that was at risk once the Grading System takes roots in the State. Some top officials of the Education Department too must have connived with this powerful lobby, Mr. Achuthanandan alleged. He alleged that by turning the investigation into a farce, the Education Minister, E. T. Mohammed Basheer, was trying to protect the real culprits, who include the `guide mafia' and top officials. The officials whose role in the affair wasunder suspicion themselves were in charge of the departmental inquiry now in progress. The Minister was thus giving them all opportunities to destroy evidence, he said. He urged the Chief Minister to initiate an honest probe into the incident after removing the Education Minister and the suspected officials from the post. The probe would reach nowhere if they continued in their posts, he added.
