Airport PCO operator held

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 30. A telephone booth operator was nabbed by the Central Industrial Security Force at the International Terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport after he overcharged a U.S. national over 200 per cent of her actual phone bill early this morning.

The CISF said the accused, Gulvinder, who worked at Sunita STD Booth of Airports Authority of India at the main security hold area of the international terminal had demanded Rs 258 instead of Rs 79 for a STD call from the passenger of Lufthansa flight LH-761 at around 1-45 this morning.

However, the passenger, Carol Reed, refused to pay the amount and offered to give the operator 2 dollars instead. At this an altercation took place between the operator and the passenger and the matter came to the notice of the CISF staff, which on realising the truth apprehended the booth operators. Subsequently the accused was handed over to the Airport Manager along with a written complaint made by the passenger. While the Airport Manager fined the accused a sum of Rs 100, the matter has also been referred to the higher authorities for taking of more stringent action against the accused.

Meanwhile, in another incident, the CISF personnel restored gold jewellery worth Rs 40,000 to a passenger.
