`Vijayan gave global status to Malayalam'

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 30. The two-day `Akhanda Sangeetha yagna' or non-stop music festival organised by the Department of Culture at Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan ended on a solemn note following the death of litterateur O. V. Vijayan.

The audience, including the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, sat in revered silence as musician Ayamkudi Mani presented the composition, `Entharo Mahanubhavulu'.

The Chief Minister, at the condolence meeting that followed, said that it was through Vijayan that Malayalam achieved a global status. He will always be remembered for his writings and drawings. Memories of Vijayan should inspire love and goodness in all, Mr. Chandy said.

The Culture Minister, A. P. Anilkumar, will represent the Government at the funeral at Palakkad on Thursday, he said.

The Tourism Minister, K. C. Venugopal, observed that Vijayan was the invaluable contribution that Kerala made towards the galaxy of world-class litterateurs. As a cartoonist also, Vijayan had always responded sharply against social inequities, he said.

The vice-chairman of Samskrithi Bhavan, Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri and the secretary, K. S. Sudha, were present on the occasion.
